Rehabilitation in palliative care: Experiences from clinical practice and education

Palliative rehabilitation is an area that has been gradually developing in the Czech Republic in recent years, both in clinical practice and in the education of physiotherapists and professional collaboration. The article presents the current development of palliative rehabilitation in the context of physiotherapy and highlights the importance of the physiotherapist as a member of the multidisciplinary palliative care team.
The text is based on practical experience with teaching palliative medicine to master’s degree physiotherapy students at the First Faculty of Medicine, Charles University, in cooperation with the Department of Palliative Medicine of the General University Hospital in Prague. It describes the content of the course, experiences with student feedback, and the topics students considered most beneficial, particularly communication, values-based history taking, formulation of rehabilitation goals, and understanding the role of the physiotherapist in palliative care. The article also briefly presents postgraduate educational activities and professional initiatives focused on the development of physiotherapy in palliative care in the Czech Republic, including newly emerging professional platforms.
At the same time, the article highlights the need for systematic education of physiotherapists in this field and emphasizes the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in the care of patients with advanced illness.
