Professional competencies of members of a pediatric palliative care team providing specialised hospital-based palliative care: The experience of the pediatric supportive care team at University Hospital Motol and Homolka

Abstract

Introduction: Specialized pediatric palliative care relies on multidisciplinary collaboration to address the physical, psychological, social, and spiritual needs of children with life-limiting conditions and their families. Clearly defined professional competencies are essential for high-quality, coordinated, and continuous care.

Aim: The aim of this article is to present a model of professional competencies within a specialized pediatric palliative care team using the example of the Pediatric Supportive Care Team at Motol and Homolka University Hospital.

Methods: The article is based on the long-term experience of a multidisciplinary team established in 2017. Professional competencies were continuously discussed and revised during regular supervision and strategic planning meetings and were formally defined at the 15th strategic planning meeting of the team.

Results: The article describes the competencies of four key professions—physician, nurse, psychologist, and medical social worker. Their roles include clinical decision-making and symptom management, care coordination and continuity, psychological and psychotherapeutic support, and addressing the family’s social situation and access to services.

Conclusion: Clearly defined competencies support effective interdisciplinary collaboration, improve the quality of care, and enhance coordination and continuity of care for children with life-limiting conditions and their families.
